Submission Guidelines
+ Speculative fiction with a spiritual thread...
Residential Aliens is a regularly updated online magazine devoted to quality speculative fiction with a spiritual foundation. Submissions need not be religious in nature. However, we are looking for engaging stories that are truthful to the human experience while offering the reader something of the eternal.
What to Write
Something in the "G" to "PG-13" range. Acceptable genres include fantasy, science fiction, thriller (but no evil or gore), supernatural mystery, as well as western, alternative history, and even humor if there's a speculative element to it.
We Pay...
+ $1 per story upon acceptance via PayPal, with the option to waive this token payment. We'll also provide a link to your website and/or book in a short bio that accompanies each story.
We Accept...
+ Flash Fiction (500 to 1000 words)
+ Short Stories (1000 to 5000 words)
+ Serial Novellas (between 2 and 5 installments; up to 20,000 words).
+ Theme related news, book reviews, interviews, and essays (between 500 and 1000 words).
We Also Want...
+ Featured Artist Interviews: If you're an 'up & coming' artist looking for exposure, I'd like to interview you and showcase your art!
+ Cover Art and/or Story Illustrations: If you'd like to showcase some of your fantasy and/or sci-fi work, I'd like to feature your art!
Email me, Lyn Perry, at resaliens @ gmail . com and let me know if you'd like to be featured in ResAliens. Include a short bio and link(s) to your online portfolio (do not submit or attach images at this point). I'll send you a short questionnaire and we'll go from there.
Send Us Your Story
Reprints and simultaneous submissions are okay, just let me know the status of your project when you send it. Please limit your subs to 2 or 3 per month.
1. Via Email: Type SUBMISSION in the subject line and submit your story to resaliens @ gmail . com as an RTF file, preferably (using 'standardish' font/spacing/paragraphing). Please include a short bio and personal website. And tell me how you heard about ResAliens.
2. Response Time: We'll respond within a week to let you know the status of your submission. I get 100 spam a day and inevitably some legit emails get lost, so if you don't hear from me within that time, query. Also, consider registering your submission, response, and results at Duotrope's Digest. It's free!
3. Reciprocal Links: Help spread the word by linking to Residential Aliens and I'll provide a reciprocal link if you ask. Also, a discussion forum is available at SFReader.
Legalese
By submitting your story, art, or article to Residential Aliens you are giving us, upon acceptance, "First Internet Publication Rights" (or "One Time Internet Reprint Rights" if your piece has been published previously) and "Non-Exclusive Online Archival Rights" with a six month minimum archive. This means that after your piece is published with us you are free to shop it elsewhere knowing that the next publisher does not have exclusive rights to it for at least six months, after which you can request that your story be removed from the website.
Note: Many publications consider stories to be previously published if they are posted online. Thus "First Rights" cannot be sold to those publications. Since reprint rights often pay less than first rights you'll want to check their guidelines before offering a piece that has been posted on the web. (For more information on your rights, read this article by Marg Gilks at Writing-World.com.)
ResAliens plans to compile occasional print anthologies as well. If your story is chosen for this format, we'll offer a separate and specific contract for that purpose when the time comes.
Best Wishes!
Editor Lyn Perry
